STP 42nd Annual Symposium
The Society of Toxicologic Pathology (STP) is seeking to broaden its membership by reaching out to scientists and students (veterinary/residents/graduate) involved or interested in safety assessment, teaching, or research in toxicologic pathology/toxicology, and inviting them to join the STP and attend our 42nd Annual Symposium to be held in Summerlin, Nevada, from June 25–28, 2023. The theme for the 2023 Annual Symposium is “Toxicologic Pathology of the Hepatobiliary System,” and promises to be another dynamic meeting with excellent scientific sessions, career development and continuing education courses, and many networking opportunities.
Scientific Co-Chairs: Arun K. Pandiri, BVSc&AH, MS, PhD, DACVP, DABT, NIEHS, Research Triangle Park, NC; John M. Cullen, VMD, PhD, DACVP, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC; and Robert R. Maronpot, DVM, MS, MPH, NIEHS, Raleigh, NC
Continuing Education Chair: Maria L. Dagli, DVM, MS, PhD, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil
Continuing Education Co-Chair: Melanie Greeley, DVM, PhD, DACVP, Charles River Laboratories, Ashland, OH
The hepatobiliary system is a common target in toxicology and carcinogenicity studies. All pathologists and toxicologists are reasonably familiar with various adaptive and adverse manifestations in this organ system. The aim of the 2023 Society of Toxicologic Pathology 42nd Annual Symposium “Toxicologic Pathology of the Hepatobiliary System” is to bring the current and emerging topics in this discipline to the membership.
The symposium will kick-off on Monday morning with a Keynote talk by Dr. Anna Mae Diehl on the challenges related to drug-induced liver injury in people with obesity-related comorbidities—a significant public health issue. This is followed by the first scientific session chaired by Drs. Russ Cattley and Bhanu Singh with talks on considerations to evaluate hepatobiliary toxicities especially those resulting from newer therapeutic modalities such as RNAi, LNP, gene therapy and kinase inhibitors. The Monday afternoon session chaired by Drs. Bob Maronpot and Debabrata Mahapatra will focus on the translational relevance of model systems to study liver cancers as well as drug-induced liver injury.
Tuesday morning will kick-off with a second Keynote talk by Dr. D. Lansing Taylor on the state of the science applications of microphysiological systems to identify hepatobiliary toxicities. The Keynote is followed by a scientific session chaired by Drs. Jim Klaunig and Magali Guffroy that focuses on various experimental model systems to understand hepatobiliary toxicities and carcinogenicity and will include talks on in vitro applications such as 3D cultures, cell painting, and next generation sequencing approaches. The Tuesday afternoon session chaired by Drs. Eric Blomme and Arun Pandiri will focus on the toxicogenomics approaches to address toxicity and carcinogenicity in the liver and will discuss practical applications of these technologies in the environmental toxicology space as well as pharmaceutical risk assessment.
On the last day, the Wednesday morning session chaired by Drs. Paula Katavolos and Adam Aulbach will focus on clinical pathology and biomarkers of liver toxicity with talks on traditional and emerging biomarkers of hepatic clinical pathology. This session will also feature two student presentations selected by the STP Awards Committee. The final session of the symposium chaired by Drs. Allison Boone, John Cullen, and David Malarkey will feature classic diagnostic dilemmas in toxicologic pathology of the hepatobiliary system and several interesting toxicologic pathology case studies from the STP membership.
In addition to the above scientific program, there will be numerous opportunities for interactions and knowledge sharing via poster presentations, Continuing Education Courses, the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) Satellite Symposium, and informal discussions during the Welcome Reception, session breaks, Town Hall, Awards and Recognition Ceremony, and finally the President’s Reception.
Please note that there are several different opportunities for students to apply for monetary awards through the generous Student Awards program. The deadline for most awards is March 30. See individual award details for nomination/application and selection processes. Registration fees are waived for active STP student members. Non-member students who apply by April 1 for STP student membership ($25 annual dues) and are approved can also register for free. In addition, non-member meeting registrants who apply for membership by July 1 and are accepted will receive complimentary membership for the remainder of 2023. Please visit www.toxpath.org to apply for membership.
