STP 37th Annual Symposium
The kidney is a common toxicologic target organ for xenobiotic agents and lesions of the urinary tract are frequently encountered in preclinical toxicologic studies by pathologists and toxicologists.
The aim of the 2018 symposium is to provide attendees with a broad exposure to the various types of toxicologic injury to the kidney, emerging translational and biomarker science and human relevance.
The symposium will kick off with a review of glomerular injury, including a plenary talk by world expert on glomerulonephritis Dr. J. Charles Jennette, and include other talks on integrated diagnostic approaches to assessing the glomerulus, and the effects of biologic and antisense oligonucleotide therapies on the glomeruli. The session will end by a discussion of Lupus Nephritis from a clinician’s perspective by internationally recognized nephrologist, Dr. Brad Rovin.
The next session will cover acute kidney injury (AKI) and focus on lesions in the renal tubule, including a review of INHAND and SEND renal terminology, and a review of the effects of microcirculation on AKI from world-class renal researcher, Dr. Bruce Molitoris. The session will finish with talks on new targets and therapies for AKI.
The next day the focus will switch to Chronic Renal Disease with talks by globally renowned Dr. Agnes Fogo, and distinguished STP lifetime achievement members, Drs. Gordon Hard and Sam Cohen. There will also be a seminar on environmental exposure to nephrotoxic substances.
Wednesday begins with a session on animal models of kidney disease including talks by several kidney experts working in the field, including Drs. Fogo, Stu Shankland, Eric McDuffie and clinical nephrologist, Dr. Matt Breyer. The afternoon session will focus on emerging science and bridging and translating nonclinical to clinical data including talks on biomarkers, in vitro screening and multiplex assays by notable emerging technology and kidney experts Drs. Mireia Fernandez Ocana, Vishal Vaidya and others. The session ends with a presentation on veterinary stem cell therapies by Dr. Jessica Quimby.
The final session on Thursday explores approaches to understanding the mechanisms of nephrotoxicity and will discuss capabilities at the boundaries and frontiers of modern investigative nephrology, including how techniques such as miRNA biomarkers and MALDI imaging each have been integrated into toxicologic studies.
There will also be a discussion of renal transporters by renal pharmacologist Dr. Joe Polli, and this last session will be anchored by Dr. Andrzej Krowleski with a talk relevant to precision medicine on monitoring the degree of renal injury in diabetes by novel methods.
In addition to these interesting topics and fantastic speakers (including a host of STP members lecturing in each session, who are renal experts in their own right), there will be a special sponsored event at the museum on Monday night, a mystery slide seminar devoted to kidney lesions on Tuesday night, and the ever-popular welcome reception, President’s reception, as well as a Town Hall and Awards presentations.
